Inclement Weather Plan

The good news - The race is on and it looks like an almost zero chance of mud.  Anyone can run a race in normal weather.  Mountain Junkies Love Tough Conditions!

The bad news, all of it, please read!

The Parkway is closed so you will need to familiarize yourself with the alternate directions into the park.  See directions at the bottom of this page.

Course info;

The course is covered in snow, and as of now, little ice.

The entrance to the park is in very rough shape.

If you have an all wheel or 4 wheel drive, bring it!

If you have room to stuff your friends in the back seat, do it!

Carpool!  You may need those people to help push you out!

Running wise extra traction would not hurt.

You may want to look into Yaktrax

Or, try something that has worked for me in the past

About the race

The Explore Your Limits 5/10k was started in 2005 as the first annual trail run in the Roanoke Valley.  Due to the 5k being a great race for people getting in to trail running and the challenge of the 10k it has grown to be the largest event in the Roanoke Non Ultra Trail Series (RNUTS).  Since the closing of the park's tourist area the race has continued on as a way to showcase what this park has to offer and the miles of tight and twisty IMBA designed single track trails.

Course Description

The 5k is a great race to introduce runners to trail running.  The race course will take runners through some of the trails and gravel roads of the Explore Park.  The 5k is 1/3 trail and 2/3 gravel road and asphalt. The 10k continues on to the single track biking trails for the remainder of the race (a lollipop loop configuration).  This is challenging course and a great way to start your racing season.  Walkers Welcome.

5K Course:

A map for the 5k cannot be provided. The 5k portion of the course is on property that is currently closed to the public and marked no trespassing. The park allows us to use this part of the park for race day only.

10k Course:

As you run with the 5k finishers to the finish line.  The 10k group will head directly out onto the intermediate biking trails.  Once you run over the bridge and up the hill, the course will take a left onto the jeep road.  At the bottom of this road you will take a left onto the 1.26 mile endurance loop.  This will come back to the trail you ran out on and the remainder .67 back to the finish line.
